People of Hutton Rudby in the C18/19: Bage to Bainbridge

Bage

John Bage occupied a house and garth or yard on East Side, bought by Joseph, Thomas & William Whorlton in 1808 [East Side deeds]

FS 461:  2 & 3 Feb 1831:  Thomas Bage had been a tenant of Rudby estate

1841 Census:  Jane Bage 11 and younger siblings, Enterpen

George Davison (1790-1860) shoemaker, Rudby, married Ann Bage (1780-1853).  He left £450 on his death.  Buried in Rudby.  Their children were Ann and George.  Ann  (1816-1855) married Thomas Stringer.  George (1817-1871), shoe maker, Rudby, married Mary Ann Mundell (1817-1882)  Buried in Rudby (issue).




Bailey

John Bailey was at “a meeting held in vestry” on 16 Jun 1831 where they voted a church rate of 2 ½ per £ to church repairs


Baillieur

The Baillieur family inherited property from Mr Grice; they had left the village by the time Mr Barlow arrived, but may still have owned property in the parish.

The NBI has burials of Elizabeth at Northallerton in 1788 a5 and of Ellen at Northallerton in 1780, no age given

7 Apr 1806:  Robert Balier of Rudby & East Rounton marr Elizabeth Passman of Rudby at East Rounton:  witnesses Wm Wood, Matthew Appleton, Eliza Kay and Hary Passman [PRs]

Their daughter Mary was born and baptised on 14 Mar 1807, Elizabeth on 21 Oct 1809, Ann on 19 Jul 1812.  Helen was baptised on 26 Oct 1816 and Charles on 11 Nov 1821.  [PRs]

Jun 1827:  Elizabeth Baillieur of Trenholm buried a45 [PRs]

Feb 1828:  Eleanor Balljeur of Sexhow buried a11 [PRs]

Mary Bailleur was 13 when she inherited the contents of Mr Grice’s house in Hutton township with a life interest in his house and lands at Trenholme.  Her parents inherited life interests in the house and lands at Hutton Moor, subject to an annuity to his sister, who inherited after their death.  She inherited his property in Halifax and his personalty.

Robert Baillieur was a farmer, sometimes described as a yeoman.  In 1818 he bought a house and garth on East Side from Thomas Passman, with Mr Grice acting as his mortgagee (he sold it on to Lowther, and Lowther to Benson).  In 1821 he was described as of Moor Farm, Hutton, but had moved on by 1825 [HR Wills].  He moved on to Yarm, but by 1828 had left Yarm and became an innkeeper in the Castle of York area.

1832:  William Bainbridge was buried on Sat 6 Oct a13;  Jane on Sun 7 Oct a16;  Maryanne on Mon 8 Oct a41. But the list sep. nomina leaves her age blank.  [PRs]

1832:  Matthew Bainbridge was buried on Tues 9 Oct a4 and Elizabeth on Sat 13 Oct a6. [PRs]

James Bainbridge was a bricklayer & builder.  His wife’s name was Elizabeth, according to East Side deeds

James Bainbridge lived on East Side:  deeds of 1816, 1817, 1825, 1830, and owned property there in the Tithe Map
John Bainbridge lived on East Side:  deed of 1825

James Bainbridge mortgaged 3 houses at the end of East Side in 1816, occupied by himself, Richard Wood, and Thomas Almond.  These were altered to be 2 houses, which were mortgaged again in 1817, occupied by James himself and John Simpson.  A deed of Nov 1825 shows that in the garden behind the 2 houses (then occupied by James Bainbridge and John Bainbridge) James Bainbridge had built 2 houses, used as 3 tenements and occupied by George Harker, Alice Pedlar and Ann Rudd

A deed of 1830 relates to land on which James Bainbridge had recently built 4 new houses and other buildings – this property adjoins the 1816/7 properties.  In 1830 it was occupied by James Bainbridge and his undertenants.  The two plots correspond to the Tithe Map plots 38 and 39.  James Bainbridge appears to have sold to the Mease family.  He left Hutton Rudby for Middlesbrough before March 1842.

late July 1830:  James Bainbridge “saw Huntley in Robert Goldsbrough’s house … about eight o’clock in the evening;  he was sitting on a box near the fireside, and had his face towards me … I know Foxton Bank … before I got to the bridge I saw blood;  this was fifty or sixty yards from the bridge … Ten days after I was passing Goldsbrough’s house, about ten in the evening.  As I passed by I was struck by a strong smell of burning.  I went into the prisoner’s house;  and told him I felt a curious sort of smell like woollen burning.  He said he had been burning some old rags.  There was a large fire.  I said it was about bed-time, and asked him if he was not going to bed.  He said ‘no, he could not sleep’.” [Yorkshire Gazette 12 Mar 1842]

1830-40 there were four main Bainbridge families in the village (others can be seen in the (incomplete) parish registers, but cannot be distinguished):  Reuben & Mary, carriers:  Edward & Margaret, tailor;  Henry, grocer; Thomas & Ann, paper box manufacturer.

Reuben Bainbridge was a carrier.  His mother a Catholic, he married one of the Catholic Meynells of Crathorne and Hutton Rudby

Edward, son of Reuben Bainbridge, was a tailor.  He & his wife Margaret (Mary in 1851 Census) had Reuben, Elizabeth, William & Sarah, who appear in the censuses but not in the PRs.  Edward’s son Reuben and grandson Edward were also tailors, remaining in Hutton throughout the C19.  Edward was baptised a Catholic, but was an active Primitive Methodist by 1887.

John, son of Reuben Bainbridge, was a carrier.  He & his wife Hannah had a large family:  Elizabeth, Reuben, Ruth, Benjamin, John G, Susan, Mary J, and Frederick appear in the censuses, but not in PRs.  John died in 1876, Hannah in 1887.  Reuben became a cartman (employed) and Benjamin a carrier (employer):  1891 Census.  The family lived on North Side, until the C20.

His daughter Elizabeth Bainbridge was the church organist [cf Winifred Blair’s Scrapbooks]
… “Some years ago” [Mr Leeper said] “a little girl with a golden plait and big blue eyes, sat at a harmonium at our church.  Her toes just touched the pedals.  The little girl was Miss Bainbridge.  Since then she has seen all sorts of vicissitudes and changes in the church’s history.  She has played in days when there has been a fine choir, and she has played when the choir has not been quite as good” … she had been organist from 1886 to 1934…”

Henry Bainbridge was in the village between 1830 and 1840;  no relation to the other families is known
Henry Bainbridge was described as paper manufacturer in Jul 1830 (baptismal register) and as grocer in Jun 1832 (bapt register)
Henry Bainbridge lost wife and two children in the cholera, baby John George bap 1832 seems to have survived.  Mrs Maryanne Bainbridge’s age is left blank in the list “Sepultorum nomina”
Henry Bainbridge was a class leader in the 1838 and 1839 Wesleyan Methodist Class lists
Henry Bainbridge was a Vestry member in the 1830s.  On 5 Apr 1831 he signed the election of the churchwardens.  He signed the appointment of churchwardens on 9 Apr 1833.  In 1832/3:  “Henry Bainbridge’s Bill 12s 9d”.  In 1834:  “Henry Bainbridge and T Catterson expenses to Stockton agreeing about stove < > £1-6-5d”.  In 1838:  a payment of £5-12-6d to “Mr Bainbridge for Black Cloth on account of < > the fourth <Desk>”.  His name does not appear in the accounts after 1841-2
