Sunday January 1
In the morning to Aldbro church  in the afternoon to Kirby Hill & In the eveng to BB church

Monday January 2
To office   At night Steele Sedgwick  Scholfield  E.C.Clark & I dined at Owens & a very pleasant evening we had   got home about 12.  At Noon walked to Langthorp  Miss Stamper left them today

Tuesday January 3
To office.  At night Lizzie & I dined at Dr Sedgwicks   Had a rubber  got home about ½ past 10

Wednesday January 4
To office.  At Night Read law at the office   attended a Meeting at the Newsroom  bought the Times for Mr Hirst at 22/-    Supped at Uncles

Thursday January 5
To office.  At night Read law at the office

Friday January 6
To office   At noon walked with Joe to Langthorpe   at night Drove Capes as far as Hazel Bank  he had tea with us

Saturday January 7
To office.  Capes went by noon train to York & was met at Cattal & from there he drove to Minskip   I drove the trap   Capes came from Knaresbro in to Minskip & we both had tea at Clarkes & attended a sale of township property     after the sale I went home with Capes to Knaresbro to stay till Monday
Sunday January 8
Mg & evg to the new church at Knaresbro   Mr Fawcetts eldest son preached in the mg & his youngest son at night

Monday January 9
Capes  Alice & I drove to Ouseburn Workhouse   Capes attended the guardians meeting & Alice & I walked to Uncle Picks where we had luncheon & then went back to the workhouse & Capes & I came on to BB together  Father brought Alice home.  At night I went for a short time to Joes

Tuesday January 10
To office.  At night read law at the office.  Supped at Uncles.  Uncle had a telegraphic message to say his brother Godfrey was dead

Wednesday January 11
To office  At night read law at the office   Mary Hirst went to Langdon today
[There is no Langdon listed for Yorkshire, but Gt & Little Langton (NR) near Northallerton, and Langton (ER) near Malton]

Thursday January 12
To office   at night Mr Capes came to stay till Saturday night  I read law at the office

Friday January 13
To office  Uncle Hirst went to Langdon today   at noon Capes & I walked to Ellinthorp Hall & called on the Clarks - At night at the office.  Walked with Sarah to Langthorp

Saturday January 14
To office.  At night Rd Hirst & I went to Mrs Parkers of Langthorp  played bagatelle   Wm Stubbs of Navestock & his wife came to Uncles today

Sunday January 15
Mg & evg to BB   Wm stubbs preached in the evening

Monday January 16
To office.  Wm Stubbs & his wife  Dora & Richd Hirst dined at the Bridge Foot today   Dr Sedgwick & his wife came to tea.  Had a very pleasant afternoon

Tuesday January 17
To office.  Had breakfast at Uncles.  About noon Wm Stubbs & I walked to Dishforth   Dora & Mrs Wm drove  we had dinner & then returned home   Lizzie Alice & I had tea at Uncles

Wednesday January 18
To office   Wm Stubbs & his wife went home this morning   I drove to Knaresbro on business had dinner at Capes’ & brought Scott home with me  Uncle Hirst & Mary came home tonight.  Had supper with them

Thursday January 19
To office.  Went down to York by the 2 o’clock train & returned at eight   I went to see the dentist but he was engaged.  Had tea at Miss Sutcliffes

Friday January 20
To office.  At night I went to Mr Burtons of Minskip & Mr Chr Clarke was there  we had a very jolly good rubber.  I rode there with Capes & Jane & Aunt Bell on their way to Knaresbro

Saturday January 21
To office   In the afternoon I walked to Ouseburn  Had tea at Uncle Picks & went on to Uncle Wms to stay till Monday.  Miss Atkinson & Miss Allan were at Uncle Wms to tea   Rd Paver came   we had a rubber

Sunday January 22
Morning & evening to Gt Ouseburn church   Miss Robinson spent the day with us   Chas Atkinson came in the afternoon

Monday January 23
Stayed at Uncle Picks to dinner & Uncle drove me home directly after.  Smallwood was at BB when I got there.  Sd & I went to Joes at night  played cards & he & I slept in Miss Henlocks bed   got to bed about 2 o’clock

Tuesday January 24
To office   Smallwood left at noon.  About 5 o’clock I rode to Grassgills to a party  Mr & Mrs Howe & 4 daurs  Mr & Mrs Henlock  Edmund Crow & Miss Kirk  Rob Rheeder  Miss Paver & Richd  Miss Lockey  Tom Johnson & I were there   Had a very jolly dance   got to bed about ½ past 2   I slept with Rd Paver

Wednesday January 25
After breakfast rode home from Grassgills  During the morning I rode with Steele to Skelton   we called at the Squires & then we rode right thro’ Newby Park as Steele wanted to see a patient   We both rode Steeles horses   Had tea at Uncles   Steele supped with us at the Bridge Foot

Thursday January 26
Drove to Knaresbro to look after the business there as Capes was away  Dora went with me   got home about five   Rode to Crows of Ornhams to meet the same party as I met last Tuesday  Had a very jolly dance got home about half past five in the morning

Friday January 27
To office   At night dined at Dr Sedgwicks   had a rubber  got home about ten

Saturday January 28
To office   Went by noon train & had dinner with Mrs Roger Buttery   came back at 3 o’clock  at night went with Capes & Jane to tea to Burtons    after they left Miss Clarke  Mr & Mrs Burton & I had a rubber   got home about ½ past ten

Sunday January 29
Mg & evg to BB Church   Rd Hirst had tea with us   we two walked over to Langthorp with Joe & Sarah

Monday January 30
To office   Dined at Joes & had tea there  Had a rubber  Called at Mrs Parkers of Langthorp & had supper at Steeles  Had a rubber & got home about ½ past eleven

Tuesday January 31
Called at Owens &c &c  Dined at Uncles   Went to Scotts to tea & supped at Uncles   got all packed up &c &c

Wednesday February 1
Alice & I started at ½ past 7 for London   Miss Kate Howe came with us from York  we got to Town at 4 & took a cab to 15 Cloudesley Sqre   Mr Thompson (Sophy’s intended) came up in the evening   so did Tom & Tom Sedgwick   Mr Crow met Kate Howe & she was going on to Epsom to school
[It appears from later entries that Jane (Mrs Charles) Stubbs and her family live in Cloudesley Square, N1, off the present day Liverpool Road, in Islington.  It is shown amongst a series of terraces laid out with gardens in the fields around Islington on a map of 1831.  Islington began to be built up in the mid 19th century; it is still on the edge of London and not densely built up on the map for the Great Exhibition. cf‘History of London in Maps’.

Thursday February 2
Started about ½ past ten went to Grays Inn & saw George Capes   went with him & was introduced to Mr Maugham the Secretary of the Incorporated Law Society   went & saw Mr Wharton a barrister with whom I am going to read  from there to 35 Queen St & found Tom Sedgwick who dined with me at Izants & then I returned to Grays Inn & back to Cloudesley Sqre   Alice went to school    Mr Thompson came up at night
[Alice is still presumably at school in rural Blackheath.  Izants:  the London Gazette of 17 Aug 1877 records the dissolution of the partnership between George Augustus Izant snr and George Augustus Izant jnr, Dining-room Keepers & Wine & Spirit Merchants]

Friday February 3
Went to Grays Inn & from there to Serle St  Lincolns Inn where I met 6 or 7 young gentn who were reading with Mr Wharton  we had a lesson  I dined at the Gray’s Inn Larder & then returned to 15 Cloudesley Sqre   Mrs Chas went with me to seek some lodgings  I had a good read at Stephens 1st vol in the evening

Saturday February 4
Studying the whole of the morning 1st vol of Stephens   In the afternoon Willey went with me to Gray’s Inn from there to Westminster Abbey & then to the Houses of Parliament which we went over & with which I was very much pleased indeed   they are most superb   we then returned to tea   Had another read.  Mr Thompson came up at night
[Barry’s Houses of Parliament, built after the fire that destroyed the old buildings, will have been only just completed.  Willey Stubbs was at this time a little over 15 years old]

Sunday February 5
Willey went with me mg & evg to Mr Mackenzies Church   heard 2 very good sermons  stayed at home in the afternoon

Monday February 6
Went down to Mr Wharton   went to search for judgments with one of Capes’ clerks  knocking about with Mr Capes   went to Tom Sedgwicks place   we dined together at the Guildhall dining rooms    I walked down to Kings Cross Station rather expecting to see Uncle Redmayne & Mary but they did not turn up.  I went back to Cloudesley Sqre to tea   Jane & Sophy went to Navestock    I adjourned to my lodgings at Mrs Pirmiger’s 23 Upper Islington Terrace    Willey went with me & we had a late tea.  Wrote to Joes wife & to Smallwood
[Upper Terrace seems to be more or less where the Police Station is now marked on Upper Street, Islington]

Tuesday February 7
Studying at my lodgings till one then went & had dinner with Willey & Alice Stubbs.  Wrote to our Alice.  Studying at my lodgings the remr of the day with the exception of walking as far as the Angel & calling on Willey & Alice for a short time

[ie The Angel, Islington, famous coaching inn and the nearest staging post to London.  Alice Stubbs of London is at this time soon to be 12 years old]

Wednesday February 8
Went down to Mr Wharton  then went & did some work at George Capes  Had luncheon out.  Went home  wrote to Capes, Tom & Mrs Henlock & walked to the Post Office   Dined at five   Went to see Willey & Alice    studying the remr of the evening
Paid Wharton £12.12.0 today

Thursday February 9
Studying till 12 o’clock then walked to Holborn  had a glass of stout & then returned to dinner  Studying in the afternoon Wrote to Bessie Carass & to Mother & walked with the letters to the post   Went in to see Mrs Charles & Sophy who returned from Navestock today   reading after that

Friday February 10
Went to Mr Whartons & from there to the Library where I read till ½ past one  then went to lunch in Holborn   returned home  studying till 6   Had dinner & then popped in to Janes for an hour   reading when I returned & wrote to Dora & Aunt Pick

Saturday February 11
Studying at home till 1 o’clock   had lunch & walked down to the Law Library where I was reading for an hour then walked home   reading till 6 when I dined & then reading the remainder of the evening

Sunday February 12
Willie & I went to Mr Mackenzies in the morning   I went & had tea at Janes   Jane Sophy Willie & I went in the evening to Mr Mackenzies  Sophy & I sat in the gallery  we had 2 very good sermons   I had supper with & then returned home

Monday February 13
Went to Whartons then to the Law Library    Left there about one & went & drew £5 at Barnetts    then met Tom Sedgwicks at the Guildhall Dining Rooms     then returned to the Library     went with 2 Law Students about six o’clock to a place close to & had some coffee   stayed at the Library till nearly 8 then returned to my lodgings    Wrote to Mother

Tuesday February 14
Studying at my rooms till one   Jane Stubbs & Mrs Wm Stubbs of Navestock called on me   I called at Janes & saw Wm Stubbs   Dined at the Grays Inn Larder     Read at the Library till ½ past four    A Law Student named Hewitt & I walked into Oxford St     We had tea at Buttons  I returned to my lodgings & had a good read before bed

Wednesday February 15
Went to Whartons   from there to the Library till two  Dined next door to the Library   stayed there till ½ past four  came home  Had a cup of tea at Janes & stayed till 8   Went home & read till eleven

Thursday February 16
Studying at home till one   Had lunch  Went down to the Law Library & stayed till half past four  dined at the Grays Inn Larder at five & then came home  Reading till 7 when Tom & Tom Sedgwick came up   they stayed tea with me & left about ten

Friday February 17
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library till half past two     then dined at the Grays Inn Larder & had a short walk up The Strand       then returned to the Library till ½ past 6  when Nanson & I went & had tea at Buttons      then I came home & read till bed time

Saturday February 18
Reading at home till one   Had luncheon   Went down to the Library till four  Had a short walk with Hoyle   we then dined at the Gray’s Inn Larder   I then went & smoked a pipe with him at his rooms in Percy Circus   then retd home & read till bedtime

Sunday February 19
Tom came for me & we went to The City Road Church in the mg & heard the Dean of Westmr  I then home with him & Tom Sedgwick  he & I dined together  we had a short walk in the afternn   after tea we took an Omnibus from Kingsland to St Pauls where we had a splendid sermon    went home with them to supper & then I walked to my rooms where I arrived about eleven
[City Road - ie leading from the Angel, Islington into the City.  Kingsland, east of Islington, had been built up in the preceding twenty years]

Monday February 20
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library     dined next door about one      stayed at the Library till four     got my hair cut & came up to Janes to tea     after tea Sophy & I walked to Huberton St & bought some cheese      I then came home & wrote to Lizzie & read

Tuesday February 21
Reading at home till 11   Went to the Library   reading there till five when I went & had a steak with Heelis somewhere not far off   I then smoked a pipe with him & we walked to the London Pavillion at the top of the Haymarket where we had some capital singing   two of Heelis’ cousins were there   I left at eleven & came by bus to the Angel

Wednesday February 22
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library till four  dined at The Grays Inn Larder & came home   just called at Janes & was reading the remainder of the evening at home

Thursday February 23
Reading at home till 12   Had luncheon   Went to the Library till 2   Heelis came  I went with him to St James’s Palace   saw all the officers & soldiers coming away from a Levee  we then went & dined & dined [sic] at Simpsons in Cheapside   He came with me to Holborn & I came home

Friday February 24
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library till 2    then went out & had a bun & went with Manson to the Vice Chancellors Courts for a few minutes    returned to the Library till half past four   came home to dinner   called at Janes & read till bed time

Saturday February 25
Studying at home till 12  called to see Jane   Had lunch   Went to the Library till 3  Walked thro the Strand  Regent St & Oxford St & then came home to dinner at 5.  Reading at home the rest of the evening except walkg to the Angel & back

Sunday February 26
Mg & evg to Mr Mackenzies church  heard Maguire in the mg.  Dined at Janes  came home to tea   Thompson was at Janes after dinner

Monday February 27
Went to Whartons till 12   Walked with a young fellow to the National Gallery in there a short time  Had lunch  got the Library [sic] about ½ past one  read till ½ past four then came home to dinner   wrote to Aunt Bell & to Capes.  Sophy came & sat ½ an hour with me  I set her to Janes & came home & read till bedtime

Tuesday February 28
Reading at home till ½ past 11   Went with Sophy to Mr Thompsons & had luncheon with him from there I went to the Library till 4     came home to dinner at five & was reading the remainder of the evening

Wednesday February 29
Went to Whartons till 12    Had luncheon & went to the Library till 4    I then walked with a Law Studt into Regent St & Oxford St & Holborn then I came home to dinner     reading the remainder of the evening

Thursday March 1
Reading at home till noon.  Had luncheon & went down to the Library till ½ past 4   came up to Janes to tea  Had a short walk  bought some biscuits  reading at home for the remainder of the evening

Friday March 2
Went to Whartons till 12  from there to the Library till 4     came home to dinner     went in to Jane’s    Mr Thompson was there    came home     reading the remr of the evening

Saturday March 3
Went & had breakfast at Janes & saw Sophy off to BB at Kings X at 7.40      I walked back home reading most of the morning        Alice & Mary Redmayne came to stay till Monday at Janes      I spent the rest of the day there     Alice & I had a short walk after dinner            Mary R & Jane went to Regent St      Tom came up at night       I walked with him to his lodgings & then he came back with me

Sunday March 4
Wet mg   went to The Iron Church      at home in the afternoon    took Mary R to McKenzies at night

Monday March 5
Went to Whartons   from there I went to Barnetts & in Fleet St I met John Rhodes of Ripon   He walked a good way with me    I then went to the Library till nearly 3     came home   reading till dinner at 5   reading till 8        Tom & young Joe Stubbs came in for 5 minutes   Had tea     Wrote to Mother & Aunt Redmayne     Reading the rest of the evening

Tuesday March 6
Reading at home till noon then I went down to the Library till 4 o’clock   came home   called at Janes for 5 minutes,  Had dinner at home & was reading the remainder of the evening

Wednesday March 7
Went to Whartons & from there to Drs Commons to search for Will of John Golding for Capes    could not find it     searched the Ct of the Bishop of London for it but it was not there Went from there to the Library    wrote to Capes   reading till ½ past 4    came home to dinner reading the remainder of the evening

Thursday March 8
Reading at home till four o’clock   Went to the Library & was reading there a short time  Went & had tea at Buttons with Hewitt and Nanson   then came home & was reading the remainder of the evening

Friday March 9
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library where I stayed till 4     came home to dinner    it was snowing fast     After dinner a box arrived from Aunt Ann containing a beautiful Ham  some bacon  above a score eggs & about the same number of tarts     reading till 8      went to see Jane & had supper with her    Ann Stubbs was there     came home after supper read for an hour & wrote to Aunt Ann thanking her for sending me a ham some bacon eggs & tarts

Saturday March 10
Reading at home till 3 o’clock  then went down to the Library & from there I went with Finch into Regent St for a walk   came back & had some coffee at Buttons    got my hair cut & then came home.  Went to Coates’s & bought some tea    reading at home the remainder of the evening

Sunday March 11
Went to a Chapel of Ease on the way to Mr McKenzies in the morning  in the evening Young Pirmiger & I went to Mr McKenzies  after church we walked as far as the Angel & back

Monday March 12
Went to Whartons    Had a short walk & then went to the Library    reading there from ½ past one till four   then came home    popped into Janes   Mrs Creswell was there  she asked me to go & see them    I then went home to dinner    reading till half past 7     Tom came up & had tea with me he left soon after 9  reading till 11
[Mrs Sophia Creswell, née Hulbert, was the cousin of Mrs Charles’ late husband; her mother Anne Stubbs was the sister of the Joseph Stubbs who married Sophia Dixon: Bp Stubbs p69]

Tuesday March 13
Reading at home till noon then went down to the Library reading there till 4      walked with Waugh into Regent St & from there came to Janes & had tea     Sat a short time with them  then came home & read the remr of the evening

Wednesday March 14
Went to Whartons & from there to The Library called at Capes’s office  was at The Library till half past four then came home to dinner    reading till 8    went down to 28 Myddleton Sqre to see Waugh  sat with him till 11    came home & went to bed
[Myddleton Square is south of the Angel; it is marked with green, for eg. a park, on the Gt Exhibition map]

Thursday March 15
Reading at home till noon then went to the Library  stayed there till half past 4  came home to dinner   reading till half past 9  Went down with young Pirmiger to The Florence for a walk & came home by the Angel

Friday March 16
Went to Whartons   Finch & I had a walk into Regent St    came back to The Library till half past 4    came home to dinner    James Foster came & had tea with me    he left about 9  Reading till after 11  

Saturday March 17
Reading at home till nearly noon then went to the Library till ½ past 3   dined at Grays Inn Larder    walked into Regent St    came home then went to see Tom but he was out      came home & went to bed about eleven

Sunday March 18
Went to Mr McKenzies in the morning  called on Waugh in the afternoon & from there to Toms where I had tea   Two Toms & I walked to Barretts Grove Church   I stayed supper with them & got home about eleven   Tom set me part of the way
[Barretts Grove is a little north of the Balls Pond Road and Kingsland High St junction.  The Gt Exhibition map shows this to be still largely rural; the area must have been recently built up]

Monday March 19
Wrote to Mother   went to Whartons & from there Finch & I had a short walk up the Strand 
I then went to the Library till ½ past four   came home to dinner   Had a pipe after dinner in the garden      wrote to Tom in answer to a request for £3    posted the letter    reading till 11

Tuesday March 20
Reading in bed for half an hour    reading after breakfast till noon    went to the Library till about four    dined at Peels with Waugh   came to his place by Omnibus & had tea with him   came home about 7    Tom came up    I lent him £3 & set him part of the way home    called at Janes   reading the remainder of the evening

Wednesday March 21
Wrote to Smallwood    Went to Whartons & from there had a short walk in the Strand   reading from one till ½ past four at the Library     came home to dinner     Had a pipe in the garden    Studying the rest of the evening

Thursday March 22
Studying at home till noon  then went to the Library till four   dined at Grays Inn Larder then came home   had a cup of tea at 5 with Mrs Charles   Smoked a pipe in the garden  Mrs Trapwell fetched Toms half of Aunt Anns ham.  Studying the rest of the evening

Friday March 23
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library where I read till ½ past four & then came home to dinner   It was a very wet cold day today.  Studying the rest of the evening   Suffering from a bad cold

Saturday March 24
Reading at home till noon then went into High St & bo.t some gloves &c  then went down to the Library till four  came home to dinner  Took a [illeg] in a Cab to Westons at night   Had some good singing & got home about ½ past 11.  Jas Foster borrowed 30/- of me

Sunday March 25
Mg & evg to Mr McKenzies  In the afternoon Had a pipe or two in the garden  Waugh called & sat an hour & I set him part of the way to where he was going

Monday March 26
Went to Whartons & from there to the Library till one  Went & had some coffee at Buttons & back to the Library till ½ past four   on my way home I overtook Cholmley  he set me nearly home   Had dinner  Jas. Foster brot me the 30/- he borrowed on Saturday & sat ½ an hour  Had a pipe in the garden  reading till 9  Went to see Waugh   reading with him till ½ past 11  then came home

Tuesday March 27
Studying at home till 11  then went to the Library till one  had lunch at Buttons  went back to the Library till nearly 5  came home to dinner  Had a pipe in the garden  reading till 8  then went in & had supper at Janes   Alice came to stay a few days with her today  came home & went to bed early being very tired

Wednesday March 28
Went to Whartons & then had lunch  got to the Library at one  stayed till ½ past four  came home to dinner   Wrote to Aunt Redmayne who is staying at Knaresbro  Reading the rest of the evening

Thursday March 29
Got to the Library at ½ past 9  reading till ½ past 12  Went with Chumbley to Buttons  went back to the Library till 5   Mayhew & I dined at Gray’s Inn Larder  Went again to the Library at 6 till nearly 9  Came home & had tea studying the rest of the evening

Friday March 30
Went down to the Library & from there to Whartons till 12    Mayhew walked with me to Staceys in Basinghall St to get measured for some boots  had lunch at Buttons before we went   got back to the Library at 2 till ½ past 4    came home to dinner    Reading    called at Janes for ½ hour    Had tea at home & studying till 9    went & had a pipe in the parlor as my landlord had a friend from Australia   he stayed till one o’clocks

Satruday March 31
Went down to the Library by ½ past 9 reading till 1  Chumbley & I had lunch at Buttons went back to the Library till 4  came home to dinner  Studying the whole of the evening till 11 o’clock

Sunday April 1
Went to Chapel on the way to Toms in the morning & from there to Toms  had a short walk before dinner   after dinner we walked to Abner Park Cemetery   went with our Tom to their Church in the evening  stayed supper & got home at ½ past 9

Monday April 2
Wrote to Mother   Went to the Library & from there to Whartons till 12  Out with Mayhew & Chumbley having lunch at Buttons  reading at the Library till ¼ to 5  came home to dinner   reading till nearly 9  then went to Waughs rooms & was reading with him till after 11 then came home

Tuesday April 3
Went to the Library reading there till one  Chumbley & I went to lunch at Buttons  had a short walk with him up the Strand   went to the Library till after 4   then went home with Finch & had dinner & was reading with him till nearly 9  we then went to Baron Nicholson’s & I never was more disgusted in my life

Wednesday April 4
Went to the Library & from there to Whartons till 12  went with Mayhew to lunch at Buttons  had a short walk up the Strand  not very well today  went with Perkins & had some bitter beer at Lakes   reading at the the Library till 5  called at Janes for 10 minutes  saw Mrs Stewart Stubbs  came home to dinner reading till 8  then went & supped at Mrs Charles’s

Thursday April 5
Went to the Library  reading till ½ past 12  had a walk with Finch into Regent St  Had lunch at Buttons  Reading at the Library till 5  came home to dinner  called at Mrs Charles’s & went back to the Library till 9  came with Hoyle & Ashton to Hoyles lodgings & had tea with him & Baker & Chumbley  then came home  Had a spice loaf from Aunt Bell which came in a hamper for Mrs Charles 

Friday April 6 -  Good
Studying till 12   Had a short walk  Waugh came to my rooms where we were reading till tea  we then walked to HighBury & went to church there  We then walked on an exploring expedition into Leonard St & we then came along with 2 g’s from the Angel & made an arrangement for tomorrow evening at 9.  Got home by ten

Saturday April 7

Took bus at Angel to Paddington & from there by train to Ealing to spend day at Mrs John Stubbs’   we went to the Old Church in the mg   Mrs John  Emily  Charley & I set Mr Wills (who dined with us & who is Mrs Johns bro in law half way to Sedbury  Had tea & sang some hymns  I stayed supper & got home about ½ past 10  Kate Butcher was there a very nice girl but a lunatic  An old lady was there also

Called at Mrs Charles’s  Went to the Library & from there to Whartons till 12  Finch & I walked into Regent St  We then had lunch at Buttons reading at the Library till ½ past 4  Waugh & I came & called at Percy Circus on Hoyle & Chumbley   Chumbley was very poorly  came home to dinner   reading till 8.  Supped with Mrs Charles

Mr Wharton was from home so did not go today.  Got to the Library by 9  readint till one  had lunch with Finch at Buttons  reading at The Library till ½ past 4  Finch came home to dinner with me   we then walked round by Highbury Crescent & reading till 10 when he left me

Reading at home till 10  Called at Waughs  also called to see Mr Thompson who returned from BB last Sunday mg   then went to the Library till one  Finch & I had luncheon at Izants & had a short walk   went back to the Library till 5    Dined with Mayhew at Izants & then went home with him  Harding came to his place & we were reading there till ½ past 10  I got home about ¼ past 11

Got to the Library by ½ past 9  reading till ½ past 12  Finch & I had a short walk & had lunch at Izants   went back to the Library till ½ past 4   called to see Chumbley & Hoyle  came home to dinner & then popped down to tea at Waugh’s  got back at 8  reading till nearly 11

Called at Mrs Chas’s  & at Thompsons with a message from her.  Went to Whartons & from there to Library.  Sharp one of Capes’s clerks came for me to go & see Capes about a Clerkship at Wolverhampton  Had lunch at Izants  went back to the Library till 5  Dined at Izants  came to Waughs & had some tea with then I came home & read till ½ past 10

Friday April 20
Reading for an hour then went to Whartons & from there to The Library    Finch & I had lunch at Izants went to the Library till 5   then dined at Izants with Perrin   went back to the Library till 7   Went with Hewitt to Buttons for coffee   went with Perrin & Hoyle to Hoyles rooms to see him & Baker & Chumbley    Had lots of law    Chumbley was very poorly & is leaving Town tomorrow    got home about ½ past 12

Reading law  got to the Library at ½ past 9  reading till one  Finch & I dined at Izants  went back to the Library till nearly 5  then came to Waughs  reading there   had tea & got home about 8   reading till half past 11

Reading law   Called at Jane’s for 5 minutes  went to Whartons  till 12  went with Mayhew to Buttons to lunch & had a short walk up the Strand  went to the Library till 4   called at Capes’ office to see Sharp  got home to dinner at ½ past 5  reading the remainder of the evening till 11

Went to the Library  Finch Mayhew & I had lunch at Buttons at one went back to the Library till 5  Dined at Izants  got my hair cut & went to a Chemist in Fleet St as I was suffering from toothache  he gave me something for it  came home  reading the rest of the evening till ½ past 10

Friday April 27
Reading for an hour  went to Whartons till 12 & from there Finch Mayhew & I went to lunch at Buttons & had a short walk in the Strand  got to the Library at one  stayed till ½ past 5  Mayhew & I dined at Izants I came home  reading till nearly 11

Went to the Library till one  Mayhew & I had lunch at Izants came back to the Library till 4  dined at Izants   walked up with Waugh   Foster came  I walked round Highbury Crescent with him  then we called at Jane’s & saw Alice & Mary Redmayne   Foster had a cup of tea with me  got started reading at 8 read till ½ past 12

Went to Toms Church in the mg  Dined with the Toms  came to Jane’s after dinner  had tea there  Took Mary Redmayne to Highbury Church in the evg  had supper at Janes   got home at 10

Monday April 30
Reading before breakfast   Went with Alice & Mary Redmayne to the Angel & from there I went to Wharton   & Pankhurst walked with me to see a tailor in Maddock St who was out but he came to my place in the evg & took my measure   I dined with Pankhurst in the Strand  I then went to the Library till 5 & Ashton & I came up together  I had tea with him & we walked round Highbury Crescent  reading the rest of the evening   feeling very finicky

Ashton called  we called of Hoyle & Baker  we went to The Hall of the Incorporated Law Society to undergo our first days examination  we had a very nice address from Walton the Master of the Examiners  we started Common Law & finished that branch & Conveyancing by 4 o’clock   got thro very well  examn easy    Hoyle Ashton & I dined at Izants & then we walked round by Highbury Crescent & had tea at Ashtons     I then came home  took a book to Waughs & came back feeling very ill and fearfully fatigued both in mind & body

Wednesday May 2
Reading law   Ashton called at 9 & we called of Hoyle & went to the Hall of the Incorporated Law Society where we underwent a stiffish examination in Equity     I finished about ½ past 2  Went with Lindo & had some coffee at Buttons     Stokes went with me to Maddock St to see my tailor but he was not in         came back & ran up to Whartons to tell him the result of the examination       Hoyle Baker Ashton & I went to dinner at Grays Inn Larder from there we walked to Hoyles lodgings & had some tea     we then went to the Olympic & heard Robson in Uncle Zachary and the B.B.       we there met Stringer a friend of Bakers & we all supped at [....]  got home about ½ past one

Thursday May 3
Ashton called & we called on Hoyle   we went to Hampstead Heath by Rail from Highbury & came back to the Law Institution   Dined at Izants & went to Buttons & had a cigar  went to the Colloseum & Hoyle then left us     Ashton & another student & I went to The Argylle & from there to the Turkish Divan where we had some coffee     we then came home     got home about 4 o’clock     Received no tidings of our examination

Friday May 4
Ashton called    we went to Hoyles & then to the Law Library    we then went to Hampstead Heath & came back to the Library     Had a walk into Regent St     Dined at Izants     Hoyle went out to dinner    Ashton & I went to the Holborn    Harding was there    he introduced me to Mrs Bella Howard   went with her to sup in the market & from there illeg & went to 19 Walton Villas Brompton stayed all night

Came from Brompton by bus   Recd a note from the Examiners to say I was all right    wrote home    Baker Hoyle Ashton & I dined at The London   we then went & had a cigar at Buttons    went to hear Christys Minstrels    Hoyle then left us & we 3 went to Canterbury Hall & from there into the market & had some oysters  got home about 3

Sunday May 6
Did not go to Church in the mg  went to Toms place  Tom Sedgwick went out to dinner.  Tom & I had a short walk in the afternoon & went to Church in the evening    I picked up 2 respectable girls & had a walk round Highbury Crescent & saw them nearly home

Monday May 7
Went to Capes office & made the necessary affidavits for my admission    went to the library  Hoyle Ashton & I were walking about the rest of the day shopping &c &c    Dined with Baker at Grays Inn  went to Buttons for some coffee    then went to half play at the Strand Theatre  very fair entertainment    from there we went to the Cider Cellars & had supper    got home about two

Tuesday May 8
Took a bus at The Angel to Westminster & was sworn there & enrolled an Attorney in the Queens Bench     Glover Stokes & I then came in a Hansom & we were enrolled in the Common Pleas and Exchequer     I then got my hair cut & went to try on a Coat in Regent St came back & was enrolled a Solr of the High Co.t of Chancery      Dined at Izants  came home called at Janes     Spent a most pleasant evg at Hoyle & Bakers rooms      met Ashton Foster Stringer Rodgers & another      played cards &c &c got home at 4 o’clock in the morning

Wednesday May 9
Did not get up till 12  Ashton & Hoyle came had some lunch with me & stayed till 5    we then went down to The Institution     Ashton went out to dinner     Hoyle & I had a walk in the Strand & dined at Izants        I then came home as Hoyle was going out & read a novel

Thursday May 10
Very wet morning    wrote 8 letters    Ashton came & we went to Hoyles & played cards      we then dined at Grays Inn Larder & went to The Princess’s where we saw Phelps in Othello  a splendid play & firstrately acted    Had some oysters & got to Hoyles about half past 12 smoked a pipe & then came home

Wet again   Ashton called & we went to Hoyles in the afternoon   we walked into Regent St & saw Ashtons tailor    we then dined at The London & went to the Haymarket Theatre & saw Amy Sedgwick in the family secret    She is a splendid actress     we then came straight home arrived about one

Saturday May 12
Hoyle Ashton & I went to The Zoological Gardens in Regents Park & very much pleased I was    we had luncheon there & stayed till nearly 4      then we went to Kings X as Hoyle expected his brother but he did not come     we went home with Hoyle & had tea & got home at 10

Sunday May 13
Went to St Mary’s Church in the morning  Foster & Ashton came in the afternoon we had a nice walk by Highbury towards Stoke Newington     I went to Harecourt Chapel to meet one of the girls I met last Sunday we had a splendid walk together after service on the quiet side of Highbury Crescent  got home about 10

Hoyle Ashton & I went to the Crystal Palace & a very pleasant day we had  I took a bus from London Bridge Station to Brompton & stayed all night there

Returned from Brompton in the middle of the day  Had a bath  went to the office & went with Hoyle & Ashton home   theatre at night

Mr Morley  Bill & I drove to Leatherhead & had lunch at Mr Nash’s (Mr Morley’s medical man) & from there we went to Epsom & saw The Derby run    a most splendid sight  Thormanby was the winner  Our Tom was there    we stayed till 6 o’clock & then we returned to Effingham    Thousands & thousands of people were at Epsom & a finer sight I never saw

Had a walk with Bill Morley   Mr Morley drove me to Leatherhead & I went back to town   Called at Janes & went down to the office.  Foster & I went to the Olympic & from there went & had supper at Scotts in the Haymarket.  Got home about half past one.  Poor Aunt Pick died early this morning

Called at Janes & saw Uncle  Went to Ashtons   Hoyle came there & we went to the office & into Regent St & from there into Hyde Park    we dined at Izants    I then went to Janes & saw Wm Thompson & walked home with him & in returning met Tom  Tom Sedgwick & Bill Morley    we took a cab to Westons & then we came home

[The Lodge Clarks are Heaton Edwin & his wife Martha Hallewell.  The Hall Clarks are his uncle Heaton Clark who died in 1861 aged 71 & family.  Another of his nephews - Charly? - took over Heaton House on Lady Day 1860 - cf Whitehead]

Aunt Bell  Mrs Capes & the 2 boys came & spent the day with us  we went ferretting in the afternoon

Joe  Tom & I drove to Ripon  I called on Rhodes   we dined at the Royal Oak  got home by 4  came back by Skelton     Tom & I walked to Heaton House to fetch Lizzie & Alice home   Dora Hirst & Mrs Chas were there    we all came home together

Friday August 3
Tom & I dined & had tea at Uncles   Mary Hirst  Miss Clark of Heaton House  our girls  Tom & I went for a short row   Capes & Joe met us.  At night went & had a game at cricket

About home in the morning   went to the White Horse to a sale of property at Roecliffe by the Trustees under the Will of the late Mr Lawson   Tom & I   Lizzie & Alice went to Sedgwicks at night  Had a rubber

Mg & evg to BB Church.  Aunt Bell spent the day with us

Monday August 6
Saw Alice & Tom off by train to London   Went ferretting & in the afternoon Rd Hirst & I got a ride in a Harrogate Cab to Knaresbro    we stayed tea there & brot home Uncle Hirsts dog cart

Tuesday August 7
Richard Hirst & I walked to Ouseburn & stayed dinner & tea with Uncle Pick   Joe  Sarah & Mother came on in the afternoon  After tea Richd & I went to Grassgills   saw Mr & Mrs Pick Kate Howe & Mr Howe  Miss Lockey & Rd Paver.  Stayed an hour  Richd Paver set us to Marton on our way home

Wednesday August 8
Richard Hirst & I had a short row & were about home all the day as it was wet

Thursday August 9
I walked to Ouseburn    it was a wet day    Richd Paver & Rt Rheeder came to Uncle Picks to measure some beasts     I stayed all night with Uncle Pick

Friday August 10
Uncle Pick had a steam thrasher at work   I left in the afternoon   Capes had tea with us at home.  I went to Joes to sup   Mary Ann Sedgwick came to stay with him

Saturday August 11
Capes went to Taitlands to day to see his wife & boys   I was about home all day as it was wet

Sunday August 12
Mg & evg to BB Church    I went with Mother & Lizzie to Kirby Hill Church in the afternoon to hear the Bishop of Ripon    The church was very crowded & we had a very good sermon  Set Sarah & M A Sedgwick to Langthorp after church at night

Monday August 13
Was at the Cricket grounds watching a match betwn Burneston & BB but it was not played out as it came on wet

Tuesday August 14
About home in the mg    In the afternoon Rd Hirst & I rowed Tom Morrell his children & his wifes sister to Westwick    Had a short walk on the Newby side   came home & went & had a practise at cricket

Wednesday August 15
Dined at Uncles   Had a practise at cricket in the afternoon & went with Hy Steele Willie Stubbs Glew & Hy Carass fishing up the river in the boat    did not get anything

Thursday August 16
On the cricket ground all day watching a match betwn BB & Harewood which was decided by the 1st innings in favour of Harewood   Uncle Pick came over   I returned with him

Friday August 17
Went with Uncle Pick to Uncle Wms cottage & in the afternoon we drove to Thos Houfes  Wm & Thos Pick were there    Mr Ellison came in after tea    got back to Ouseburn about ½ past 12

Walked home from Ouseburn after dinner   Had tea & supper at Uncles

Mg & evg to BB church   walked with Joe  Sarah & Mary Ann Sedgwick to Langthorp after church at night

Went to the office in the mg    In the afternoon I went & Dr Sedgwick & his wife to Topcliffe to tea    Met 2 Misses Stevenson & their 2 brothers  Miss Overbury & Annie Morley      got home about 12.  Dined at Uncle Hirsts

At the office in the morning    Had a game at Cricket in the afternoon   went home with Joe in the evening

Friday August 24
Walked to Uncle Picks   After dinner we drove round & saw the Stock - Rd Hirst set me half way to Ouseburn

Uncle Pick & I drove round to see the Stock    After dinner I walked home    After tea I had a walk up the river side with Capes who came yesterday to stay till Monday with us

Mg & evg to BB Church   went with Capes to Joes to tea.  Kept house at The Bridge Foot in the afternoon

At the office & about home   Had a game at Cricket in the afternoon  Ought to have gone to Stevensons of Rainton to tea but had such a sore throat I did not get

To the office    Had a walk with Uncle round by Kirby Hill & Sion Hill in the mg    Went to Mr Lawsons on Magistrates business at 6 pm & then walked with Steele to Ellenthorp Poor Houses

Wednesday August 29
Father & Mother & Dora Hirst went to Redcar at noon    Uncle Pick came on in the afternoon & had tea with us   I walked with Steele to Norton   called at both Mr Walburns  got home about ½ past 8

Thursday August 30
At the office   Uncle Hirst & I had a good walk round by Stump Cross & Minskip     Joe & I had a walk up the river side at night

Friday August 31
To the office in the mg    Capes came to stay till tomorrow with us    After tea we Joe & I had a walk up the river side    Supped at Joes  had a rubber at whist

At the office most of the day   went to Mr Lawson at 6 pm on Magistrates business & then Uncle Hirst Rd & I walked to Shields of Grafton  Uncle & I attd [attested] his Will  Had tea & supper at Uncles

Mg & evg to BB Church  Kept house in the afternoon   Walked to Langthorpe after dinner & Rd Hirst & I set Joe & Sarah home at night

Went to the office in the mg  After dinner Uncle Hirst & I walked to Dishforth   called at the Morleys but they were out    we had tea with Miss Barroby     got home about 8     Supped at Uncles

Went to the office in the mg  In the afternoon had a game at Cricket

Wednesday September 5
Went to the office in the mg  Playing Cricket in the afternoon  After tea I walked to Scotts  got home before ten.  Dined at Uncles

Thursday September 6
Was playing Cricket all day on behalf of 22 against 11 in which we (the 22) were victorious in one innings & above 50 runs to spare  At night I went with Joe & Rd Hirst to Mr Parkers of Langthorp for a short time

Friday September 7
Was at the office in the morning   In the afternoon Rd Hirst & I walked to Ouseburn   Had tea at Uncle Picks  we rode home with Joe & Sarah who were also there at tea  Aunt Bell was there too.  Got home about 8

Saturday September 8
To the office   Uncle Pick & Aunt Bell came to tea   I walked with Rd Hirst to Heaton House  Sat about half an hour

To the office.  Rd Hirst dined with us  He & I drove with John Warwick to his farm shooting   got 3 partridge   Had tea at Uncles  Had a game at Cricket in the evening

Ferretting at the warehouse all the morning   Billy Scott came & he dined with us  Had tea at Uncles  Rd & I walked to Mr Parkers & then round by Kirby Hill & met Uncle coming from Longdon by the train

At the office in the morning   Went with Warwick to his Aldbro farm  shooting but got nothing

Wednesday September 26
Went with Mr Warwick to Knaresbro   Went to the Court House with Capes   Saw Uncle Wm when he said I was to get a Certificate & go & shoot for him     Had lunch at Cape’s      came home with Warwick & he & Rd Hirst & I went to Aldbro shooting but got nothing     Rd & I then went to Heaton House & had tea      Father & Mother came home from Redcar.  I got my Certificate to shoot game

Went to the office  A very wet day  In the afternoon went with Mountain to Langthorp & Sion Hill shooting  Did not get a shot  went on to Uncle Hirsts

Friday September 28
Went to York by Rail   Annie Hood was going to Leamington  We travelled together to York.  I went to Miss Sutcliffes     Had lunch there        Aunt Redmayne & Mary  Aunt Bell   Mrs Stackhouse Miss Cragg & I took a Cab & saw a review by Genl Cathcart of the Yorkshire Volunteeers on Knavesmire & a very pretty sight it was         Hy Redmayne & Uncle & Capes were reviewed.        Mary Redmayne & I walked from the review to Miss Sutcliffes     Hy Redmayne & Mary set me to the train to come home

Walked to Ouseburn to stay at Uncle Williams  Went shooting  only got one brace of birds  Had a rubber

Out shooting all day   Capes joined me at the Workhouse at noon  We only got 1 bird which I shot   Had a rubber in the evening   Mrs Haworth came in

Out shooting all day   I only got one bird.  Went to see Uncle Pick at night but he was out  Uncle Wm  Aunt & I went to Haworths in the evening  had a rubber.  My birthday.  Went to see Uncle Pick   He was out

Out shooting all day   Got a brace & a half.  had a rubber in the evening  Went to see Uncle Pick but he was out

Thursday October 4
Drove Mrs Henlock & Mrs Haworth in the Dog Cart to Cattal Station on their way to Harrogate     Went to the Harvest field with Uncle       Went shooting for an hour or two after dinner       Knocked down two birds right & left but only got one of them as the other got over the hedge into a beanfield & I co.d not find it

Friday October 5
Out shooting most of the day      I got one brace both of which I shot at one shot    there were only three birds got up.  Had a rubber

Saturday October 6
Out shooting in the mg     Got a hare & a rabbit      In the afternoon Mrs Henlock & I drove in the pony carriage to The Cottage with the drinkings [?] & from there to Borobridge       I borrowed Warwicks pointer bitch till Thursday.     We stayed tea & came home after

No church in the mg      I walked up to Grassgills in the afternoon & stayed tea     Richd Paver set me back      I went to Gt Ouseburn Church in the evening & went for a short time to Uncle Picks after

Monday October 8
Out shooting all day     got 2 ½ brace of birds.    Mrs Haworth came in the evening & we had a rubber

Tuesday October 9
Out shooting all day     got 1 ½ brace of birds.    Had a rubber

Wednesday October 10
Very wet all day     In the house reading.    Had a rubber in the evening

Thursday October 11
Went out shooting in the morning     Got one brace.    Uncle Wm & I drove to BB  stayed tea   returned immediately after      Mr Bland the P.O.Surveyor was at Uncles.     Father & Mother were just returning from Knaresbro as we started home

Friday October 12
Richard Hirst fetched me in the Dog Cart to BB.     Capes  Joe  Dick & I went by noon train to Helperby & went out shooting but only got a rabbit.        We attended the Anti Felony Association meeting      Supped at Mrs Rogers & walked home    We arrived a little after 12

Saturday October 13
Rd Hirst set me to Ouseburn      I went out shooting for an hour or two but it came on wet only got one bird.   Had a rubber

Mg & evg to Gt Ouseburn Church       Rode Uncles pony & went with Haworth in the afternoon to Aldwark      Had tea at Uncle Picks

Monday October 15
Very wet all day.    Went with Haworth to Witherons Lane to see a ploughing match   Reading Jane Eyre most of the day.     Had a rubber in the evening

Out shooting all day    Very wet in the morning only got one bird     Haworth came in the evening     We had a rubber

Out shooting all day     Got 2 brace & a rabbit      Had a rubber in the evening

Thursday October 18
Very wet all day.     Spent the afternoon at Uncle Picks     Rd Paver came to ask him to dinner but did not stay tea     Went to Uncle Wms after tea & had a rubber

Friday October 19
Out shooting all day    Got a hare & a bird.      I hit a pheasant very hard & he dropped in a turnip field & I could not find him anywhere.     Had a rubber in the evening

Saturday October 20
Came to BB     dined at Uncles      Rd Hirst & I rode to Asenby on business of Mr Jeffersons of Northallerton.     Supped at Uncles

Sunday October 21
Mg & evg to BB Church     Kept house in the afternoon

Monday October 22
Rd Hirst & I walked to Uncle Wms to breakfast   Out shooting all day   I shot a cock pheasant  we found a partridge & Tomy Gudgeon came to us & he shot a brace of partridges       Had a rubber in the evening

Tuesday October 23
Uncle Pick came to the fair      he brought Rd Hirst & me home.  Was at the office most of the day       Rode Joes Mare & had tea with Thos & Annie Morley & from there I rode to Asenby on some business for Mr Jefferson      Got home about ½ past 9.    Uncle Wm stayed all night to be ready for the fair tomorrow

Wednesday October 24
Went by first train to Mr Jeffersons of Northallerton              Engaged all the morning in Mr Jeffersons office       returned by the 3 o’clock train        Went home with Uncle Wm       Had a rubber      Mrs Haworth & a young lady friend came in

Thursday October 25
Out shooting all day.  I shot a rabbit     Gudgeon shot a partridge & a young hen pheasant.  Had a rubber after tea

Friday October 26
Out shooting all day      Got a fine cock pheasant & a brace of partridges.  Mr & Mrs Haworth & Miss Robinson came in in the evening.    We had a rubber

Saturday October 27
Out shooting in the morning      Got a brace but gave Uncle Pick one of them.    Walked home after dinner      Mr & Mrs Capes had tea with us.      Mrs Thompson was at Uncles on a visit,  Drew & ingd [engrossed] Henry Carass’s Will & attested with Mrs Simpson the execor of it

Mg & evg to BB Church      Went to Joes to tea & came down with them to church after

Monday October 29
Rode the old pony to Ouseburn      Uncle Wm & I went to Lascelles’ fields in the mg  I shot 2 hares & I caught a wringed partridge.   I then joined Capes who was at the Guardians Meeting & we went shooting on Marton side    got a brace of birds.    He shot one & I shot one.  Had tea at Uncles & had a rubber & then I rode home      Mother went to Scarbro to stay with the Redmaynes

Tuesday October 30
Started going to the office again as Freeman was turned away for theiving [sic] At the office all day      at home with Father at night

Wednesday October 31
Went to the office      Dined with Jim & Mary Sedgwick at Uncles      After dinner I rode to Asenby & got Metcalfe to sign an Agreemt to sell Mr Jefferson some land.  Was at Mr Tetleys was introduced to Mrs Tetley & Mrs Wade (who was Miss Tetley)     Got back to tea at Tom Masons      Chas came in     I got home before 9

Went to the office till 4 o’clock   then I walked to Heaton House where I had tea & from there I walked to Ouseburn to Uncle Wms   Had a rubber

Rd Hirst & I walked home from Ouseburn     I went to the Office.     Had a letter from Mr Jefferson of Northallerton asking me to go & assist him as he had a Clerk ill but I co.d not go as I was helping Hirst & Capes

To the office in the mg     Rode with Mr Abbay to Branton on my way to Ouseburn at noon   Shot a hare in Lascelles’ fields & one in Uncle Pick’s field which I gave to him    Had a rubber in the evening

Mg to Gt Ouseburn church    Dined & had tea with Uncle Pick      he & I went to the Independent Chapel at night

Monday November 12
Out shooting all day     got 3 brace of birds    Rd Paver went a short way with me & Mr Howe & Gudgeon joined me in the afternoon    Mr Howe shot nothing   Had a rubber in the evening

Tuesday November 13
Uncle Pick drove me to BB.    To the office till noon when I went to Northallerton to register some deeds       Called on Mr Jefferson   Dined at 4 at The Lion with Mr Bland P.O. Surveyor whom I met at Northallerton Station       Saw Mr Saml Powell at Northn Station   Got home about 9

Wednesday November 14
To the office all day.   Reading at the office at night

Thursday November 15
Drove Uncle Hirsts dogcart on business to Wetherby  Dined at the Market Table at The Angel Edwin Mitchell was there    got home about four.  Had tea & supper at Uncles

At the office all day.   Capes dined & had tea with us

Saturday November 17
To the office all day     Dined at Uncles

Sunday November 18
Mg & evg to BB Church   Went to Joes in the afternoon & had tea with them.  It snowed this afternoon

Monday November 19
At the office all day    Dined at Uncles  Rd Hirst Joe & I supped at Mrs Parkers of Langthorpe  we played Bagatelle

Tuesday November 20
At the office all day.    Rd Hirst & I set off at 3 o’clock to walk to Ouseburn   We got a ride in Pybus’s Cab as far as Branton Lane      Had tea at Uncle Picks     Went to Uncle Wms     Mrs Haworth came in     We had a rubber

Wednesday November 21
Rd Hirst & I went out shooting     I got a brace but it came on so wet we were obliged to give over.  Had a rubber in the evening

Thursday November 22
Rd Hirst & I were out shooting all day     I got 2 brace of birds & a snipe one brace of which I brot home.  Father fetched us home in the Dog Cart as there was a letter from Geo Capes which wanted answering (Re Daniel’s Practice)   Supped at Uncles

Friday November 23
Went to the office    Capes & Miss Clark of Heaton House dined with us.   Joe drove Capes & me to Starbeck where we took rail to Leeds  from there to Stockport & then to Macclesfield   stayed at The Macclesfield Arms all night   Had a short walk in the Town   got to Macclesfield soon after eight o’clock

Saturday November 24
Started at half past 7 to Froghall where we took a Convce to Cheadle & saw Mr Daniel with whom we agreed about his practice prov.d he co.d get me the apptmt of Registrar of the County Co.t     Mr D dined with us at The Sheaf     we left about 2.  We went over the Roman Catholic Church which is most superb.    We got to Leeds about 8      stayed all night at The Griffin     Had a walk in the Town

Sunday November 25
Started about 7 to Knaresbro    Went to the new Church in the mg  I walked home after dinner Capes set me to Hazel Bank  Went to BB Church at night

Monday November 26
Went to the office all day    Had tea at Uncles    In the office after tea

Tuesday November 27
To the office    Dined at Uncles    Lizzie & I walked up to Heaton House to tea    Steele came up after tea  got home about 9

Wednesday November 28
Rode Joes mare to Knaresbro to see Capes     Saw Uncle Pick     dined at Capes’s     Capes walked to BB in the afternoon     he got there about half past five.  At the office after tea

Thursday November 29
To the office   In the afternoon Richd Hirst & I walked to Dishforth     I wanted to see Mr Riddell.     Had tea at Miss Barroby’s & then walked home.    Dined at Uncles

Rode with J N Warwick to Knaresbro     Dined at Capes’s & then rode to Ouseburn with Johnson of Aldwark Bridge to stay with Uncle Wm till Saturday as Mrs Henlock went to Settle yesterday       We went to Haworths in the evening & had a rubber

Went out shooting for a short time  got 1 ½ brace of birds but it came on wet so I was obliged to give up     I went to Uncle Picks to tea     Robt Rheeder came down we sat till 12 o’clock  Uncle Wm was at Haworths

Out shooting all day    got 1 brace of birds

Saturday December 8
Out shooting till noon    got 2 brace of birds     after dinner went with Uncle Pick to Bbridge returned with him to tea

Mg & evg to Gt Ouseburn Church    went to Uncle Wms before Church at night

Monday December 10
Uncle Pick & I drove to Hammerton Statn where we met Robson & Rheeder & we went to York      went over the Cattle Show  I bought 2 flannel shirts which Mrs Henlock said she would pay for     we dined together at an Inn & got home about 9      Ellison & House came down in the same train with us

Tuesday December 11
Went up to Uncle Wms   Uncle Pick & I drove to BB to dinner        we went to a sale of property at Grafton & Marton at the Crown in the afternoon     Uncle went home to tea     Capes & Jane dined & had tea with us     I went to Joes to sup

Wednesday December 12
Went to the office   At the office at night   Marian Clark came to our house to day to stay a few days

Thursday December 13
Went to the office.      Rd Hirst & I went on business to Ornhams & just jumped with the hounds   went with them to Grafton Winn but they did not find      Dined at Uncles   Charlotte & Betsey Smith were staying there.     Rd Hirst & I walked to Ouseburn      had tea at Uncle Picks    After tea we went to Uncle Wms had a rubber & stayed all night

Friday December 14
Rd Hirst & I went out shooting     got a hare & a brace of birds      Had some beer at the Workhouse & at Grassgills  walked home to BB after tea

Went to the office     Smallwood came over & left by the two train

Shooting at Heaton House all day     borrowed Mountains dog but neither Mr Clark nor I got anything

Went with Lofthouse to Knaresbro    Came back in Pybus’s cab    Mr Chas Clark had tea with us     he went to meet his son Charley who came from school & then he took Marian home from our house

At the office   In the afternoon Joe & I took the gun to Langthorp Field & shot a waterhen

Friday December 21
At the office   Capes dined with us.  After tea Capes & I went to Joes & had a rubber     Capes stayed all night with him

Saturday December 22
To the office   Went home with Uncle Pick in the afternoon to stay till Monday

Sunday December 23
Went to Gt Ouseburn Church in the mg     very snowy all day

Monday December 24
